This course provides an understanding of the nature of the touristic experience and helps participants to critically assess the relevance and applicability of new approaches to delivering meaningful tourism experiences. Having successfully completed this course, participants will demonstrate an ability to integrate resources of information communication technology into the tourism experience design process.

Course Structure:

A MODUL University professional seminar is divided into three sections, allowing for maximum flexibility.

  1. Pre-Module phase: a two week e-learning period where participants are required to study reading material at home
  2. Core-Module phase: a two day seminar on MU Vienna’s campus
  3. Post-Module phase: a 2-4 week e-learning period where participants are required to complete a project or paper at home

Total course time is approximately one month, while the required on-campus seminar time is two days.

Lecturer:

Prof. Dr. Daniel Fesenmaier is Director of the National Laboratory for Tourism and eCommerce for the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Temple University. He is also Professor in the Department of Management Information Systems (MIS), Fox School of Business, Temple University. He is Co-director of the Tourism Education Futures Institute (TEFI), Fellow at the International Academy for the Study of Tourism, Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Innovation in Business and Social Research (IIBSoR) University of Wollongong, Australia and Adjunct Professor, MODUL University Vienna.

Dr. Fesenmaier has received a number of awards for his teaching and research. In particular, he has been recognized twice for excellence in teaching through the “List of Instructors Rated as Excellent by Their Students,” at the University of Illinois. For excellence in research, he has received the King J. McCristal Outstanding Scholars Award, University of Illinois, the Medal of Exceptional Scholarly Achievement (2007) from the International Academy of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research, the Michael. D. Olsen Research Award (2010) from the University of Delaware, the Faculty Research Award (2010), Temple University, and the Outstanding Researcher Award from the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Temple University (2010); additionally, he co-authored papers that have received the Best Paper Award in the Journal of Travel Research (2009) and the Journal of Travel and Tourism Marketing (2004), as well as Best Conference Paper Awards at ENTER2003, ENTER2004 and ENTER2010, at the 8th Annual Graduate Students Conference in Hospitality and Tourism(2003), and at the International Chrie Conference (2008).

Ziele

Students are required to prepare for the core module by completing the pre-module and reading all assigned core-module readings. The core module will involve a mixture of lecture, discussion, case studies, and individual writing assignments. Students are expected to actively participate in class discussion.

Certification:

Participation in all three phases of the professional seminar (pre-, core- and post-module) leads to a certification, with the possibility to transfer the credits earned to a degree program (e.g. MBA program). All study programs and seminars are accredited by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation (AQ) Austria.

  • Proof of an undergraduate university degree with a minimum duration of three years or completion of an equivalent degree relevant to the content of the study programme
  • A minimum of three years professional experience
